The Modern Motherhood Story

Created by a mom who needed this too.

Hi, I’m Katie, founder of Modern Motherhood Chicago and mom to two little girls on the north side of Chicago. I have been talking about launching a community to better support moms for a while, and I’m excited that I am finally just doing it.

I was inspired to create Modern Motherhood after my own experience becoming a mom for the first time and, more recently, doing it all over again with baby number two.

My first few years as a new mom were largely without an in-person mom community. I was surprised at how isolating it could be. Finding your people isn’t always as simple as showing up at a park or coffee shop, but I really needed friends who were navigating the same stage of life. There are so many changes after becoming a mom that I often found myself thinking, "Is this normal? Am I the only one feeling like this?"

As I was looking for a mom community, I was also managing my physical recovery, reevaluating my career path, and trying to adjust to a schedule that left little time for me. Fortunately, I found support through trusted experts in postpartum and women's health that made a big difference in helping me start to feel like myself again. I worked with a therapist, a pelvic floor physical therapist, and a career coach. I also had support from a postpartum doula in the early months of motherhood and one of my favorite fitness instructors at my gym who was also a mom and understood my stage of life. I basically had to build my own village over time.

My goal for Modern Motherhood is to bring new moms and moms with young children together through thoughtfully curated local groups and connect them with trusted experts in postpartum and women’s health. I am keeping the groups small so women can really get to know each other and forming groups that help facilitate easier and more natural connections.

Some of the connections that felt most natural for me came from having something more in common—kids around the same age, living nearby, a similar life or career stage, or shared experiences like IVF or becoming a mom later in life.

Finding your village shouldn’t have to happen by chance. Hope you can join us!
